The Healthcare Careers Pathway (HCP) is in its first year of existence at North Chicago Community High School. This pathway is designed to increase the opportunities for students at NCCHS to pursue careers in a variety of healthcare fields. A team of NCCHS teachers, in conjunction with lead partner Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFUMS), created a pathway that will allow career exploration in the health professions while increasing rigor in core classes.
The first cohort of the HCP has illustrated great growth in its first semester of existence. Attendance rates, EPAS scores and GPAs have increased, and the students have explored numerous medical careers through various hands on learning experiences.
The HCP was selected to present at the Illinois 60 by 25 Network Conference on January 15, 2015 in Aurora as part of a panel discussion entitled From the Classroom to the ER: Designing Health Science Career Pathways in Illinois. The group has also been selected to be part of the poster session at the prestigious Carnegie Foundation Summit on Improvement in Education in San Francisco, CA March 2-4, 2015. The poster presentation is entitled The Power of Collective Impact: How to Increase Stakeholders Contributions to Create a Viable Healthcare Pathway.
The HCP has the support of numerous external partners including the City of North Chicago, Abbott Laboratories, DePaul University, YouthBuild Lake County, Advance Illinois and the Museum of Science and Industry. The HCP is excited to increase its numbers as they add a second cohort of students for the 2015-16 school year.
There also is an Information Technology Pathway being planned for the 2015-16 at NCCHS. DePaul University has committed to being our higher ed partner on this pathway. The purpose of this pathway will be to increase opportunity for NCCHS students to receive skills related to the exciting careers of the Information Technology sector. There will be opportunities for NCCHS students to gain industry recognized credentials as well as opportunities to continue their education at DePaul in their College of Computing and Digital Management.
