Saturday, May 16, thirty-six moms, female support persons and pre-adolescent girls ages 9 to 12 attended Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital’s puberty class, “What’s Next For Me? Changing Times, Changing Bodies” held at the hospital in their Health Education Center from 9am-12noon. Designed to support Moms in guiding their daughter through puberty and beyond, the class, taught by a registered nurse, provided accurate information on what’s normal and how to adjust to the changes their daughters are experiencing.
This is the second year the district has partnered with Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital to provide this wonderful opportunity to district families. Moms and female support persons were given the option to ride the shuttle provided by the district with their daughters to increase bonding time. Upon arrival at the Health Education Center, participants were welcomed and provided with a delicious breakfast to begin the morning.
The class provided opportunities for girls and their moms or female support person to learn, interact and share experiences. In addition to learning about the changes their bodies will experience, the girls received information on nutrition and discussed self-image. In an effort to reinforce and support what was taught, each girl received American Girl’s, “The Care and Keeping of You: The Body Book for Younger Girls” and “The Care and Keeping of You Journal for Younger Girls” (Funded by Title I).
Moms and female support persons were given an opportunity to provide feedback toward the end of the class. When asked, “How could we have improved your experience?” here is what a few of them had to say:
“Everything was done in excellence. Very informative and beneficial to health and growing up in the stages of life. Breakfast was delicious…Glad we were able to attend.”
“I love(d) it. Wish we could spread the word to other school(s) and parents…”
“This was a very informative experience for me and my daughter. I loved it. Everything was amazing.”
“Everything was great! Thanks so much!!! The instructor was Great!!!”
North Chicago Community Unit School District 187 would like to thank all who attended this event and extends best wishes to moms and female support persons committed to guiding their girls through puberty and beyond.
