Friday, September 30, 2016, marked the third annual Discover Consumer Banking Day of Service in the schools of North Chicago Community Unit School District 187 (CUSD 187). This year, 185 employees from Consumer Banking volunteered 740 hours of their time in CUSD 187, in partnership with North Chicago Community Partners (NCCP). Each year, Consumer Banking’s projects focus both on facilities improvement, and hands-on engagement with students. In addition to sorting, organizing and shelving Consumer Banking’s donation of over 5,000 hygiene and non-perishable food items in NCCP’s Family Care Closet, this year’s physical service largely targeted renovations to the athletic facilities, as well as spruce-ups in other indoor and outdoor spaces. Research confirms that a school building can have a measurable influence on student achievement and teacher engagement and similarly, that school-based sports can have positive individual social, emotional and physical effects on students. Needless to say, the physical work of Consumer Banking volunteers contributed significantly to the growing infrastructure and supplies needed to allow students to compete – in all areas – in the 21st century.
