read moreIn 2008, the Gorter Family Foundation made a long-term commitment to the children and families of North Chicago by providing seed capital for a new operating foundation, North Chicago Community Partners (NCCP). NCCP was formed in direct response to the lack of outside support for academic challenges facing the children of North Chicago– an under-resourced community with public schools that are failing to meet the needs of more than 3,500 school-age children.
Through its unique adaptation of the “community school model,” NCCP works in collaboration with almost 50 different organizations and thousands of volunteers to provide after school enrichment activities, lunchtime tutoring and mentoring programs, family engagement and education opportunities, Saturday programs and much more. NCCP also ensures that all students come to school “ready to learn” by offering vision screenings, eye glasses, weekend food programs, uniforms, school supplies, etc.
With time, NCCP has naturally evolved into a strategic thought partner and sounding board to the district. At the district’s request to formalize this positive working relationship, NCCP has made a commitment to increase collaboration with CUSD 187 in the areas of solicitation, coordination and stewardship of strategic partners and to provide ongoing strategic planning and operational support. Our model now encompasses two distinct components; program delivery and community school network development. This enables NCCP to serve as a facilitator, a coordinator, a matchmaker and a highly regarded strategic partner, working with the district to strengthen its base of support, while building a sustainable and replicable model for delivering high-quality education in North Chicago and other communities.
