New Grant Boosts North Chicago District 187’s Commitment to School Safety

North Chicago, Illinois 60064 – 11/16/2023 – District 187 is pleased to announce a grant award of $667,000 from the US Department of Justice, COPS-SVPP (Community Office of Policing Services - School Violence Prevention Program) to enhance the unwavering safety measures at each school. D187 schools are exceedingly safe, and the project will upgrade security by utilizing evidence-based programs and technology.

The COPS-SVPP grant will fund a variety of school safety objectives, including:

  • Classroom Door Locks 

    • New locks at the primary entrance to each classroom; doors will have the ability to lock from the inside by a teacher or staff member in case of an emergency.

  • Weapons Detection Devices 

    • NMSA will acquire two weapons detection units and metal detectors on wheels for mobility. 

  • Security Cameras 

    • One hundred sixty new cameras will integrate with the current technology infrastructure.

  • Radios 

    • One hundred fifty new radio units will improve district staff communication and permit additional contact methods with local law enforcement.

District 187’s goal for project completion to improve security is the end of 2025. D187 is committed to maintaining a safe learning environment for all students.
