AJK's annual Literacy Night was huge success. Students and parents enjoyed a presentation from special guest and author Natoia Franklin. Franklin read from her newly published book Miguel and His Miracle Kick. She also shared useful reading strategies including a song to help readers remember how to infer. All participants received a bookmark with the inference song on it.
Students and parents were also challenged with writing a persuasive argument on whether or not 4th and 5th graders should have cell phones. Participants used the OREO graphic organizer, a tool that helps students plan and brainstorm before writing.
Attendees worked with academic vocabulary words; creating sentences, pictures and definitions for the vocabulary words. Finally, students and parents learned about the Zones of Regulation. The Zones of Regulation is an internationally renowned intervention which helps children to manage difficult emotions, known as ‘self-regulation’.
